Br. Armin Luistro FSC: First Filipino Superior General of La Salle Brothers Worldwide

De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) alumnus and former education secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC was elected as the 28th Superior General of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, May 18, 2022, during the 46th General Chapter, the Assembly of 70 Chapter Brothers. The assembly was held in the Aula Magna of the Generalate in Rome, where Luistro got the vote of the 70 Chapter Brothers.

To commemorate the momentous occasion, the bells of the Sanctuary of the Generalate were rung for a few minutes. Shortly after the assembly, Luistro – along with the Brothers of the Generalate went to the Sanctuary to pray before the Founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle’s relics.

As the new Superior General, Luistro is now the leader of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a 3000-strong congregation committed to the mission of education. In religious institutes, the Superior General holds the supreme executive authority. With this role, Luistro will lead and govern the Brothers like those before him.His term is from 2022 to 2029. He is the first Filipino to hold such a title. 

The congregation was founded by St. John Baptist de La Salle in 1680 and is currently running in more than 1,100 educational institutions in 80 countries. De La Salle Philippines is part of such a network, composed of 16 schools from across the country. 

Lipeño Roots

Br. Armin was born on December 24, 1961 in Lipa City, Batangas. His parents were Jose Dimayuga Luistro and Magdalena Aranda Altamirano – Luistro, both of humble beginnings.

From 1966 to 1967, Luistro studied at Our Lady of the Rosary Academy. Then from 1967 to 1971, he studied at the Canossa Academy. By 1973, he finished grade school in De La Salle Lipa. In 1977, he graduated from high school in the same institution. 

Br. Armin worked in De La Salle Lipa as a religion teacher, campus minister, and class counselor from 1983 to 1986.
